Reddit.com is a site of aggregated web content based on user-generated submission and community interest voting. With a simple username/password account (no external linking necessary) you can submit to the website various items of interest that you come across while browsing the web. This can include links to interesting stories, pictures or or discussion threads that you initiate. You can post to a page of topicality based on keywords (such as "politics" or "science") where you create a title that hyperlinks to the site that you found or discussion that you started. Your link will appear among 20 or so others per page with previous pages being accessible up to several days. A system of "upvoting" and "downvoting" will dictate how well your posting is received by the reddit community with "upvoting" adding to your "karma" which increases your status on the site. If your posting receives a certain minimum number of "upvotes" (about 30 I've heard, but probably more) it will be moved to the front page of reddit among other top stories. You can browse by categories of videos, gaming, world news and pictures, where I found this little gem.
Reddit provides for a unique portal of community interaction. From meme-creation to altruistic acts helping to restore faith in humanity, reddit provides for a public domain of interaction on a myriad of different levels. While there are moderators (both person and program) who govern content issues, it falls to the community to report a posting for inappropriateness or other negative reasons. The more something is flagged as undesirable by various redditors, the more likely it is to be taken down or redesignated.
A unique feature of reddit's various categories and points of interaction is the "Ask Me Anything" posts that people create. This is an opportunity for all walks of people to write anything from a sentence to an essay about themselves and have other people ask them questions. The links that appear on this page will be a mix between "AMA" postings and "AMA requests." Bruce Cambell recently had his fun AMA posting where fans got to post questions to the actor about his life, the acting world, and new projects. (And for the noobs, Bruce Cambell = Ash Williams in Army of Darkness)
There are also other AMA's of interest such as one person's experience being born into a Scientology family. Here, Reddit provided for a forum of discussion that allowed for some fascinating insider information regarding the Church of Scientology, one of the most secretive religious organizations in the country.
Reddit has something for everyone because everyone is responsible for providing content and judgement. While there isn't any formal organization, the community does a remarkable job moderating itself. A comment troller will not be tolerated (unless they are like, really funny) and outward hostility is generally kept to a minimum. Redditors on r/politics can get a little feisty sometimes but that's pretty much a given. Anyway, if you have time on your hands, work to procrastinate or you have a night forever alone, reddit.com is great company for the 11pm-3am time block.
